![]() ![]() This powerful pastiche stands alone with ease and stacks up nicely alongside the 90s greats, although it certainly comes with a distinctly different approach to storytelling.įans of classic RPGs will find a lot to love in Penny Arcade’s On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness 4. While its inspirations are clear, Rain-Slick 4 never takes the easy route and becomes a derivative homage piece. Replicating the style and gameplay of the retro RPG in a meaningful way is no easy task, but Zeboyd comes through strong. The wide variety of abilities and enemies, knockout soundtrack, and fights with special rules all do their best to battle combat fatigue. The game’s pacing clips along at a reasonable pace, but there are a few areas where a player may wonder “Are we there yet?” as they trudge through encounters to reach a critical point or boss. Rain-Slick 4 attempts to battle the inherent inertia of clicking through menu after menu to dish out an attack again and again, and it’s mostly successful on this front. It’s a blend of what you’d expect from the old school RPG days, a shade of Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, and hints from something like Trigun… It’s something special and it fits the game immaculately. Something that must be mentioned is the game soundtrack from Hyperduck. Players will rarely face the same creature more than once, so this is a fairly interesting way to keep things fresh from battle to battle, because let’s face it – Regardless of how you dress things up, 16-bit era RPGs contained some degree of monotonous fighting. The enemies all come with witty customized descriptions for players to enjoy. ![]() As for the story itself… Well, let’s keep things spoiler free but to state that it’s insane is putting it lightly indeed.Īs for the villains, they seem to have been concocted from a tasty brew of pop-culture, nightmares, and tongue-in-cheek. There are characters from the Penny Arcade series and lore. They have abilities dealing with flavor waves and soda dispensing. Not only the game carries a superb script, it also manages to retain the essence of Penny Arcade from the web comic, as if the player is playing the web comic itself. Yes, there’s an ice cream cone character. As a last word to say, Penny Arcade Adventures: On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness, Episode One is now among my favorite games of all time. The underpinnings of the storyline are based in the zany humor that has come to define the series.
